From delivery delays to dependable partnership: How UK Carpets & Curtains found business confidence with Tropical
When supply problems with a previous blinds supplier began to damage her reputation with developers, MD? Nikki Middleton knew something had to change. Today, after switching to Tropical, she’s not only found reliability, she’s found a true trade partner who helps her business grow.
About the Business
- Business: UK Carpets & Curtains, Basingstoke www.ukcarpetsandcurtains.co.uk
- Owner: Nikki Middleton BSc (Hons)
- Opened: 2010 (relaunched 2024)
- Customers: Mix of homeowners and new-build developers
Nikki’s business had grown steadily over more than a decade, supplying blinds and shutters both to the public and as part of property incentives for new housing developments. But by late 2024, supplier issues were putting real pressure on her operation.
The business challenge
Working with her previous supplier, Nikki faced frequent delays and repeated quality issues. When damage occurred during delivery, replacements could take weeks to arrive, leaving customers waiting and deadlines missed.
“I had a massive situation multiple times. I’d report damage and then wouldn’t hear anything for a couple of weeks. I had customers waiting, developers with plots to complete. I couldn’t work like that.”
The communication gap left her feeling stranded.
“It always felt like the main building didn’t want to deal with it, they just pushed it down the line. I never knew where production even was.”
Making the switch
Around the same time, Nikki had been speaking with the Tropical team about shutters. The difference in approach was immediate.
“You were already talking to me about shutters, and I knew the brand. When I switched, everything just felt easier. The communication with Quy and Jemima is open and honest, and I can always pick up the phone if I need to. I feel very supported as a retailer – miles better than with anyone else I’ve dealt with.”
She also appreciated being able to visit our factory in Sidcup and see the operation first-hand. “It gave me confidence. I could see the people and the process behind the product.”
Building something new together
With Tropical’s help, Nikki relaunched her shutter offering and built a new in-store display to showcase the range.
“We had loads of support putting in the new stand, even a reduction on the display price. It’s really helped us promote the Mayfair range, which my builders love because the turnaround is quick. That’s exactly what they need.”
Now, she’s not only supplying shutters again but growing that part of her business faster than before.
