Meet Neil Boorman: 30 Years at Tropical
Some careers are best told as a list of job titles. Neil Boorman’s is not one of them.
After 30 years with Tropical, Neil has worked across almost every corner of the business. He started on the factory floor building wooden Venetians, then built experience in customer service, purchasing and operations, including running a separate factory in Higham for a time before production returned to the main site. It gives him a rare understanding of what it takes to deliver a great product, from the first conversation through to the finished installation.
Today, as Senior Manager, Shutters, Neil looks after the Shutters team and everything that comes with it. But it felt wrong to ask him to simply fill in a form. His career at Tropical has been too varied, and his knowledge too hard-earned, for that.
Instead, we sat down for a chat in Neil’s natural habitat: the Tropical Shutters Training Room. It is where new members of the Tropical trade network come to get to know our ranges, ask questions and build the confidence they need to sell and install shutters well.
Neil first joined Tropical after spotting an advert while looking for a new opportunity. Three decades on, he is still quick to play down his own contribution.
“It’s been long and varied,” he says. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is to be adaptable.”
That ability to adapt has served him well. He has seen the business grow, watched shutters become a bigger part of the interiors market, and helped shape the way Tropical works with its trade partners.
For Neil, though, it always comes back to relationships.
“We aim to go beyond the supplier-client relationship and become a real partner to the trade,” he says. “It should be more than just transactional. That extends to our own supply base too.”
It is clear that he means it. Neil is fortunate to visit suppliers in person, including Tropical’s shutter suppliers in China. He speaks enthusiastically about the people he meets there, the standards they work to and the care taken at every stage.
As he talks about the visits, his eyes light up and his whole expression changes.
“Seeing the care and professionalism of everyone there, and the effort the packers put into preparing products before they are shipped, really brings home how much goes into every order.”
The accompanying photograph shows Neil during a recent visit to one of Tropical’s shutter suppliers in China. It is a reminder that every finished shutter has a much longer story behind it, involving skilled people, careful preparation and strong working relationships.
Over the years, many of Neil’s supplier relationships have grown into genuine friendships. On one visit, it was a real honour to be introduced to the newborn child of a colleague at the factory. The family had not yet chosen an Anglicised name and asked Neil for a suggestion. As the baby had been born in the Year of the Dragon, he suggested George.
It is a lovely detail, and a good example of the relationships Neil has built over the years. They are not limited to orders, delivery dates and product specifications. They are genuine connections.
The most rewarding part of Neil’s role is seeing that work come together. From the first conversation with a trade partner, through ordering and manufacturing, to the final installation, he enjoys seeing a project through.
“We produce great-looking products, so seeing them installed by our trade customers brings a sense of achievement for the whole supply chain.”
One career moment that stands out was hearing that Tropical had become the UK’s leading hardwood shutter supplier. For Neil, it represented years of effort from across the business.
He believes that installers want a supplier they can rely on. Easy ordering, clear information and knowing what is happening with an order all make a difference. Tropical has invested in The Tropical Portal so members of trade network can manage their business with us more easily, from placing orders to tracking progress.
Neil also sees sustainability becoming a bigger part of the conversation.
“People want to know that the products they put into their homes are sustainably made, using responsibly sourced materials,” he says.
After 30 years at Tropical, Neil’s idea of success is refreshingly straightforward. It is about building strong relationships with the trade and maintaining them over time.
When asked how his colleagues would describe him, Neil was characteristically reluctant to answer. So we went straight to the source. Their verdict? Professional, knowledgeable and supportive. Spend a little time with Neil in the training room and it is easy to see why.
After 30 years at Tropical, Neil has plenty of stories, an impressive amount of practical knowledge and a real appreciation for the people behind the products. He might be modest about his own achievements, but his impact on the business is clear.
And, after all that, we finished with the obligatory quick-fire questions for a little light relief. Neil is firmly a tea man, an early bird and, diplomatically, equally fond of dogs and cats. Given the choice of a beach or city break, he would head for the beach, ideally followed by a relaxing weekend and a good walk. His film choice? Interstellar, perhaps because after three decades in the trade, Neil knows the value of a good blackout.
